I've kept birds all my life, and today I also work with birds at the zoo in Singapore. chirpsandcharms started with one little cockatiel who changed how I see bird care.
James came home with me in April 2025, when she was 4 months old. She looked like any other young cockatiel. It didn't take long to realise she needed help.
Soon after I brought her home, James kept breaking her feathers, and they bled. I took her to the vet straight away and she was diagnosed with mites. The vet explained that mites are common among birds sold in Singapore.
James also came with a leg ring. After doing my own research, I decided to take it off.
Her wings had been clipped when she was young, and they were cut too deep. For about 4 months after I got her, she couldn't fly at all. The vets told me her wings would not grow back.
With a lot of care, her wings did grow back. Today James free-flies anywhere in the house (with the windows closed!).
She's a cute lover girl who adores her mommy. She loves seeds, follows people everywhere, and is always curious about new faces. She has a funny habit of sticking her head into things, and her favourite toys are the ones she can chip pieces off, like solar balls.
Going through all this with James opened my eyes. I feel very little is done for birds in Singapore. Too often they're treated as one-time pets, or a child's first pet that ends up neglected.
Clipping wings and keeping birds from flying is treated as normal. I don't think it should be.
I started chirpsandcharms to bring more awareness to how birds are cared for, and to be a role model for other companies and bird owners in Singapore.
Bird toys still aren't common in Singapore. But birds need stimulation to be happy and healthy, and not every bird gets it. That's what I want to change first.
I want to grow into more one day, but starting with toys lets me do it properly.
